Series Paper
My series of work uses a necklace, a jacket, and a sword to celebrate the legacy of my brother Kurt. My first piece, Keep Moving Forward, is of two kids running on a road toward a glowing necklace. There is a distorted, grim forest on both sides of the road. The meaning behind the first piece is that you will be tempted by Satan, but do not fall off the path, instead keep moving forward and strive for the light. Clouded Times is a picture of the sky with family members in the clouds, but my brother is over the sun. My brother has had a large impact on my life, even though he died before I was born. Even though he is gone, he is a part of my life and is right beside me, and that is the reason I put him over the sun. Summit is a photo transfer at the summit of a mountain, with a sword in the ground. Fence Post is a photo transfer, of a mountain range with a fence, spray adhesive to a watercolor of a mountain range. Tree is a red ink sketch of a tree, with glowing yellow necklaces on the branches, on a photo transfer of a green field.
Each piece of my series is a mixed media of a photo transfer and either with coloring pencils, quill with ink, watercolor, or charcoal. I use acetone to transfer a photo for all of them except for Clouded Times. In Keep Moving Forward, I used the line of the roads to draw the attention to the kids and the necklace. I use a wooden tool to burnish diagonal lines, when I was transferring the photo, into the sky and trees pointing down to the open space where the road and the kids are. I used a grey coloring pencil to add a little value in to the trees and used different shades of yellow in the necklace. The way I transferred Clouded Times was I took a blicks board and painted gesso onto the board and laid down printed pictures ink side down. Then I painted gesso on top and let it dry. Then I used warm water to peel the paper off and the ink stayed on the board. I burnished pictures of my family with the ink side down on contact paper. I let it soak in warm water and peeled the paper off. The ink stayed on and I glued it on to the photo transfer. The rays of sunlight create a nimbus around Kurt’s head, making him the focal point. The sword, in Summit, is contact paper glued with gesso mixed with a silver metallic paint. I added a shadow, with coloring pencil, to the sword, to ground it to the picture plane so it is not floating in space. In Fence Post, I added value to the watercolor mountains by making vertical and horizontal slope lines with charcoal to add the allusion that there is a forest. I took white pastel chalk and added in just a small amount of white to give the black forest some contrast. I also added in some white pastel chalk into my clouds. In Tree, I used red ink and fewer lines on the lighter places on the tree. For the darker areas of the tree, I used more lines and mix a bit of brown with red ink. For the darkest parts of the tree, I used more and heavier lines and made the red mixed with brown ratio 1 to 4.
My art shows the legacy of brother and is represented by the items in my art. Art is a way to conceal my ideas, life lessons, and myself in an art piece so that one day people may benefit my experience.
